MMMMom

Daphne is picking up more and more words each day, and so we have been trying to emphasize the ones that would be useful to her as well as the ones that she is picking up on naturally.

Dad, Hi, Flaff, Eye, Bye... all these words have made it on the list, but she refuses to say, "mom."

I just don't know what to think. I guess she will get it one day, but I am feeling sad that it is moving further and further down the list.

Hi Chris. Melissa's mom here.

Here is my theory of why mom is often so far down the naming list. Part of this is based on my own experience of being a full time mom hanging around with full time moms. Attachment parenting, family bed and breastfeeding were the norm for my gang.

It seems to me that the baby is so close to mom that they don't really see themselves as separate in a lot of ways. Why would you name your hand or foot and call it when you needed it? It's just there as a natural and expected part of life. You can count on it. Other things are not so very attached and come and go a bit more.

And - again in my observation - this is a very good thing. We sure had a lot of very confident, happy little ones exploring the world with their "stable datums" close at hand.

I think Daphne is doing just fine in her "naming things schedule". She sounds like she is learning at an amazing rate and has confidence to the max.

I love your blog!
