A few days ago, I was trying to figure out what to do with a vanilla bean. I decided to make some home made yogurt with it, and it was really great. As I sat on the floor near Daphne eating it, she came over and insisted that she needed to try some. I am not feeding her dairy yet, so I avoided giving her some while I thought about what to do.
I decided that I would try to make yogurt out of breastmilk. I had a liter or so of breastmilk in the freezer that was coming around to being 6 months old, which meant that it was time to use it up. Since I am not going to be giving it to her anytime soon (because there are no weddings in the near future), I decided that I was going to try to culture it into yogurt so that she would have a more solid dairy product to eat.
I am a very experienced yogurt maker, so I followed the procedure and got the culture in it and put it in the yogurt maker. When I came back the next morning, it turned out that it had cultured, but it had not coagulate. To make a long story short (after trying to make milk into cheese to no avail either), BREASTMILK DOES NOT HAVE THE PROTEIN STRUCTURE NECESSARY TO COAGULATE DURING CULTURING. Must be nature trying to tell me to stop cooking with breastmilk. I will use breastmilk to make rice cereal and that kind of thing when we get up to that point, but that is still a long way off.

See, that's interesting stuff. :)
Hi Christine! Rich found your blog from your photo site... we totally have to meet up... it's amazing to find another cloth-diapering, baby-wearing, breast-feeding mom in these parts! And fyi...here's a link I found about making soap from breastmilk (http://traditionalmidwife.com/mothersmilksoap.html)... been pondering what I'm going to do with all the milk I stored - seems like a good idea!
